The best men’s moisturisers to give dull skin an instant lift

From Kiehl's, Clarins and Aesop to Tom Ford and Perricone MD, post-workout primed to anti-blemish treatments, our comprehensive guide to the best men's moisturisers has every base covered.

And if only the latest men’s moisturisers will do, check out our list of the best new grooming items this week.

What is moisturiser and why do I need it?

A moisturiser should be the first tool in your arsenal for avoiding dry and tired skin. When combined with a good face wash it helps to rehydrate your skin’s outer layers so you look your best around the clock. This is especially the case when it comes to your face as it’s more exposed to the elements than any other part of your body. Need some more motivation to lather your face every morning? Moisturisers that contain SPF help to protect your face from sun damage and related skin cancer risk.

What time of day should I use moisturiser?

We recommend using these moisturisers twice a day, in the morning and the evening. A daily routine would be to wash your face with a mild cleanser and follow this with one of our picks below. However, this can differ depending on product, skin-type, time of year and even environment. Since your skin hydration needs will vary according to the weather, you’ll want to tailor the contents of your wash bag to the seasons.

What's the best moisturiser to buy?

GQ's guide to the best men's moisturisers is your expert one-stop shop for all the latest releases and go-to classics out there. With upwards of 80 releases tested by our writers, finding a moisturiser that suits both your skin and budget can be a challenge. That's why we've collated our select favourites below whatever your skincare needs.

Best new moisturiser

This month saw two new releases from two of our favourite grooming brands in Aesop and Horace. The former's Silence Facial Hydrator is a near-instant salve for sensitive skin, while the latter's Mattifying Face Moisturiser was made for those of a more oily complexion. As for Aaron Wallace's Revitalising Facial Moisturiser? It's been specifically formulated for Black men, whose skin is often in need of extra, rapidly-absorbed hydration.

Best cheap moisturiser

CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion SPF50 £12 Lookfantastic Buy It Hawkins & Brimble Elemi & Ginseng Daily Energising Moisturiser £14.95 £11.22 Boots Buy It Q+A Ginger Root Daily Moisturiser £7.65 Amazon Buy It

While we'd usually set aside around £30 for a quality moisturiser from a reputable brand such as Kiehl's or Aesop, that's not to say you can't hydrate your skin for considerably less. Our pick of this affordable collective belongs to CeraVe's Facial Moisturising Lotion that's elevated with SPF50 UV protection.

Best moisturiser for dry skin

Dr Jart+ Ceramidin Cream £30 Cult Beauty Buy It Augustinus Bader The Ultimate Soothing Cream £215 Cult Beauty Buy It Peter Thomas Roth FirmX Collagen Moisturiser £79.50 Lookfantastic Buy It

Although all moisturisers are designed to reinvigorate your skin, a select bunch have been purpose made to thoroughly rehydrate while restoring your skin's barrier against day-to-day pollutants and other obscenities. For a reasonably-priced option, we'd recommend Dr Jart+ Ceramidin Cream. If money is no issue, both Augustinus Bader's Ultimate Soothing Cream and Peter Thomas Roth's FirmX Collagen Moisturiser take to the issue like a sledgehammer to a walnut.

Best moisturiser for oily and combination skin

There's little worse than lathering on any product with the worry it might actually aggravate any existing skincare issues. Luckily for those with oily or combination skin, grooming brands have plenty of finesse in working to the benefit of oily or combination skin. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream gets a hearty recommendation from us on this front, but both Heath's Oil Control Moisturiser and Horace's Mattifying Face Moisturiser do a similar job without breaking the bank.

What moisturiser is best for tattoo aftercare?

Careful, this is a common misconception. Bepanthen, which is an ointment rather than a moisturiser, is the recommended product for tattoo aftercare and you’ll want to apply it every three to six hours for around a fortnight after you’ve been inked. So as much as these moisturisers will revitalise your mug, they’re no good for keeping your tats in tip top shape.

What other grooming products work best with a men’s moisturiser?

To each man his own, but we’d recommend pairing your moisturiser with a good men’s face wash at the very least. Then have a think about mixing an exfoliator into the process that’ll diminish dirt and get shot of dead skin cells and an eye serum to target more delicate skin in this area. And if you’re in need of a more intensive refresh? Then, as a special treat for getting your skincare regime in order, try slapping on a face mask.

Best men’s skin care products for aging adults

Skin care is a multi-billion-dollar industry that focuses primarily on preventing the appearance of aging in women. Thousands of products claim to prevent wrinkles and fade spots, moisturize, protect and even reverse the skin’s aging process. However, no matter what you do to keep your skin from aging, it needs extra care once you’ve reached your 60s and beyond—and men require skin care as they get older just as much as women do. As older adults, the goal is to keep your skin healthy, moisturized, free of damage and protected from the sun.

“As you age, you are at increased risk for skin injury,” the National Library of Medicine writes. “Your skin is thinner, more fragile, and you lose some of the protective fat layer. You also may be less able to sense touch, pressure, vibration, heat and cold.”

Yet, most men don’t think much about skin care until there’s a problem.

”While you cannot undo the damage your skin has already been exposed to, you can prevent further damage and help reverse some of the changes that have occurred,” dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, told Men’s Health.

Caregivers should encourage the older adult men they care for to begin a skin care routine as soon as possible. It doesn’t have to be complicated or take a lot of time, but it should cover from head to toe. If every day is too often to complete all of the steps, break them up into a few days a week instead—except for sunscreen: Use that every day!

Products for older men’s skin care

Best facial cleanser

This gentle, easy-to-use and affordable product is good for anyone’s skin, but for older adults, it’s a great choice because it hydrates and doesn’t dry out the skin with unnecessary ingredients.

Best facial moisturizer

Whichever facial moisturizer you choose for your older adult, make sure it’s rated as SPF 30 or more.

This moisturizer will work for older men because it’s lightweight and it isn’t greasy. In addition, it has an SPF of 35, which will protect from harmful UVA and UVB rays that can cause damage to older skin, which gets thinner as people age. Keep a bottle near the front door to make sure they put it on before leaving the house.

Best body cleanser

One of the biggest skin care challenges for older adults is preventing dryness. Dry skin can be itchy, irritating and uncomfortable, and scratching can lead to more significant problems if the skin breaks. Aveeno is the best body wash for keeping skin hydrated and moisturized. Because it’s so affordable, you can encourage your older man to use it abundantly during his bath or shower.

Best body lotion

SPF 15 protects skin from the sun, while vitamin B5 and sunflower oil moisturize. Keep it handy in the car and on your older adult’s bedside table to encourage them to apply it multiple times a day. It’s fragrance-free, too.

Best sunscreen

This sunscreen gives the best coverage you can find for sensitive, aging skin. If your senior is planning a day outside, add to the Cetaphil facial moisturizer for an extra boost of protection, and use it on exposed parts of the body each day.

Best hand cream

Don’t let the name of this hand cream scare you off. Even retirees will appreciate this heavy-duty product that works to moisturize and repair skin on hands. Use it multiple times a day on your older adult’s hands; you’ll see results quickly, and their hands will feel better if they’re uncomfortably dry and cracked.

Older men’s feet are often very dry, cracked and possibly painful. Urea cream is used to treat rough skin and conditions like eczema. This over-the-counter cream contains 40% urea cream and salicylic acid to smooth and remove calluses and dead skin. You can help your older adult feel better with a soothing foot massage while you apply this to his feet.

Best shaving product (a splurge that’s worth it!)

Indulge your older man with this delicious-smelling gift set. It comes with luxurious shaving cream, a brush applicator, pre-shave oil to moisturize and protect the skin, and an after-shaving balm to soothe and calm sensitive skin. He’ll feel terrific after shaving and look clean and fresh as well.
